Being a College Student While Maintaining Student Credit Cards and Good Credit Scores

Students must especially take care of their credit and maintain good credit scores; otherwise their after-college life could become nightmarish. It is much easier for students to obtain credit cards, but students must have responsible credit card usage habits. This article will give you healthy credit card tips and advice for students.

Credit cards are as useful to a student as it is to an adult. Students use credit cards not only to buy books but also for payment of their medical bills, grocery bills, emergency funds, etc. Some use their student credit card wisely and pay their debts on time while others accumulate huge debts and maintain multiple credit cards. These students would have to continue paying off these debts even when their college life is over. It is therefore very important that the students manage their finances as efficiently as possible.

If you are a student it is presumably easy for you to get a credit card. There are offers everywhere on campus, at social gatherings, in college canteens, etc. Credit card companies have done the research and it is concluded that students are loyal customers. Once the student obtains a credit card he/she is likely to retain that same credit card for many years, it is almost as if the life of a student has a special bond with their credit card ---- good times and bad times. Today the terms and conditions for issue of credit cards to students are very simple; so many students are able to get credit cards without much effort. Credit card companies also know that most students usually default on payment of their dues, which will allow the credit card company to charge higher interest and make more money from your debt. Companies usually charge high late payment fees and high interest on any outstanding amount.  Furthermore, credit companies give college students credit cards because they know that college students are more likely to be concerned and go the extra mile to pay off the debt, even borrowing money from family members or taking out additional loans to pay off debts.

There are certain things that students must keep in mind when they use credit cards. First, a student should only maintain one single student credit card, only when the extreme need exist then at maximum two student credit cards. A student should only accept credit cards that carry a low balance ($1,000 or less) or no more than one month's worth of living expenses. It is very important to pay credit card dues on time. This will not only help you reduce the late payment and interest charges, but it will also help you maintain a good credit score. Having a good credit score will help in your adult life when you want to take out a loan. If you have not defaulted in your credit card payment then the credit card companies will be more than willing to lend money to you --- even though a credit card company can make more money from delinquent offenders, because the risk is much higher, they still want to lend more to those who are most likely to pay back the loan.

When choosing a credit card it is very important that the student chooses the right card. Friends, family, fellow classmates, and financial advisors can help in deciding the right card. Also the student can do their own research and find out which card will best suit their requirements. The student should be well aware of the charges which the credit card company will charge in case of no payment or late payments. When the student is completely satisfied with what the credit card has to offer they should apply for it.

Many students end up in huge debts because they fail to understand the fees and interest charged by the credit card companies. Sometimes the fees and the interest charged by the companies exceed the total outstanding balance. As a student and card holder you are advised to make every effort to pay at least the minimum amount due.

There have been instances in the past where the credit cards of students have been stolen. Once the credit card is stolen and misused, your credit history is damaged. Students are advised not to give their credit card number to anybody and protect the use of their credit card. If making purchases over the internet or phone then it is advised to use disposable credit card numbers if possible.

Credit cards used wisely can be used as a tool to teach students how to manage their money. It is therefore very important that students learn to pay their dues on time and don't indulge in extravagant spending. A student can need a credit card for many reasons, such as buying school books, emergency funds (such as: return home money, car repairs, or medical bills), or a credit card can be used by a student to maintain a comfortable college life. It is most important for students to responsibly manage their credit card usage.

The best way to stay out of debt is not to assume any debt, however this is an unlikely way of life for many in today's world. If you are a student seeking a credit card, then you need to apply for a credit card which benefits you.

With the rules of the world today you will need to be financially fit to live the theorized "American Dream" --- take seasonal family vacations, own a home, live in a safe and friendly neighborhood, pay your bills, and enjoy life! Contrary to popular belief, I think credit spending should start as early as possible for any individual. The earlier you prepare the more equipped you will become. Learning and properly improving credit is a skill which takes time to learn and master, you may hit obstacles but overcoming those obstacles are what decides your fate. With that said, no one should obtain credit, student credit cards or otherwise until they are ready and have done their research.

For students needing a credit card you should fill out this student credit card application.  For students who are over their head in debt they should seek professional advice.  Dave Ramsey is one of my favorite financial gurus and I highly recommend reading any of his books.  He is one of America's most respected financial pundits who has helped many individuals and families get out of debt and become debt free.  His book titled "The Total Money Makeover: A Prove Plan to Financial Fitness" is a great read and will help relieve yourself from troublesome debt.
